Since the first hair transplant in the 1950’s there have been many advances in technology, training and hair transplant techniques. For someone who is looking for a solution for their hair loss, it can be hard to understand what technique or method could suit their needs. The trade-offs between different hair restoration techniques are cost, time, recovery and natural looking results.
While many hair restoration techniques have been created to reduce the cost of a procedure, or reduce the surgery time of a doctor, there has not been a technique in the UK that focuses on what is the best outcome for the patient until Gro's microsurgery hair transplant, also known as direct implantation. If you would like personalised information and a comparison based on your hair loss, book a free consultation with Gro in Manchester or call on 0161 839 3769 to ask a question or organise a no obligation consultation in-clinic.
FUT vs FUE vs Gro Microsurgery
FUT hair transplant
FUT Hair Transplant (Follicular Unit Transplant) is an older style technique where a long, thin strip of scalp is removed by scalpel, typically from lower down on the back of the head. The scalp is then stitched back together. Under a microscope, the hair follicles are divided into single units. It is a cheaper form of hair transplant as the extraction phase is quicker than alternative techniques, however it leaves a significant scar that can be seen under short hair and if you are prone to keloid scarring, it can cause a very noticeable scar where the strip was removed. Recovery is usually longer with FUT due the need for the scar to heal.
The implantation phase of FUT involves removing the individual grafts from the strip and then punching holes in the scalp to place individual grafts into. This can result in an unnatural result as the hole punched needs to be larger than the hair follicle, therefore there is the potential for the follicle to move and grow in an unnatural way.
FUE hair transplant
FUE Hair Transplant (Follicular Unit Extraction) is another older style technique that improves on the FUT extraction phase of the hair transplant while the implantation remains the same. The major difference with FUE is that each graft is taken out individually. A punch is used to make a small circular cut in the skin around a hair follicle or group of follicles, removing them from the scalp, leaving a small open hole. The process is repeated until the surgeon has enough follicles to cover the treatment area. The holes heal to tiny white scars throughout the donor area and can be undetectable depending on the skill of the surgeon. These scars heal quicker and are less visible than FUT.
With both the FUT and FUE options, follicles are implanted the same way, by creating reception holes in the treatment area and placing the hair follicles into the holes with forceps, allowing little control over the angle, direction and depth. Implantation is normally done by technicians, not by a surgeon. With these traditional techniques, the focus is on how many follicles are extracted and little or no emphasis on follicle survival rate after implantation, which is crucial. Follicle survival rate can plummet when follicles are not handled correctly.
Gro Microsurgery - Micro FUE
Gro Microsurgery is considered the most refined and delicate technique, yielding natural results with minimal recovery time. The extraction technique we use could be referred to as a micro-FUE as it doesn't involve cutting into the patients’ skin. The extraction tool used by our highly skilled doctors have a diameter of 1mm or less are used to extract hairs one by one from the donor area. This minimally invasive microsurgery extraction is always done 100% by a certified doctor ensuring consistency and high quality.
Between extraction and implantation, the follicles are kept in a special solution (the same solution used in organ transplants), to maximise follicle survival rate.
Gro microsurgery implantation differs from standard FUT and FUE in that the grafts are inserted directly into the treatment area with a specialised tool that gives the doctor complete control over the depth, angle and direction of the hair. The hairs are implanted firmly in their new position and grow to blend seamlessly with the rest of the hair. For personalised hair transplant information, call our friendly team on 0161 839 3769.
